CLASS SPECIALS
Class Specials are the classes students take outside of their homeroom, including Library, Art, Music and Physical Education. Brookwood PTA supports additional activities and resources in these “Special” classrooms.
LIBRARY
Brookwood’s Library is a busy place and the Brookwood community is committed to keeping it that way. Always at the top of the list of needs to support with PTA funding, programming and library activities throughout the year keep students engaged and proud to grow as readers.
What happened to the Fiction Section of the Library? The days of the Dewey Decimal System are gone…
Genrefy the Brookwood Library: Fiction!
Traditional Elementary Libraries use the Dewey Decimal System… this means in the fiction section, books are organized by the authors’ last names.
Genrefy means to sort the books into different genres, similar to a bookstore. The books are then alphabetized by the authors’ last names. The spine labels of Brookwood’s various genres are color-coded.
Brookwood’s Genres include:
Realistic Fiction – yellow
Sports Fiction – dark blue
Adventure Fiction- orange
Historical Fiction- pale blue
Mystery- purple
Science Fiction- dark orange
Fantasy- light green
Classics- pink
Books in a series- series stickers
______________________________________________________________________________
This is a transition year for this process – evident by seeing that most of our books are color-coded with spine labels. Our next step is to add information to our Destiny Catalog so the books are searchable and may be located in the corresponding genre.
While our school libraries are transforming, we still provide a traditional library program, only with enhancements. Our traditional library program provides students with library lessons, reading and literature, technology resources, collaborative research and project support. Young, Fiels, Grief and Norton share a vision of future libraries in School Librarians: Leaders Transforming Teaching and Learning, as “places of opportunity, learning hubs, technology to find the latest resources, fostering critical thinking, analyzing and creating new ideas in compelling ways, and instilling confidence in reading multiple formats.” In the Brookwood Library we are enhancing our traditional library program and aiming for these goals by adding a MakerSpace, creating flexible spaces for collaboration, and reorganizing our fiction section into genres.
Author/Illustrator Visits to Brookwood:

Brookwood Readers Achievements
Students are invited to participate in a number of reading programs, for which they receive certification upon completion at the end of year Awards Ceremony, including the following:
William Allen White Children’s Book Award
Our students participate in the William Allen White Children’s Book Award. The William Allen White Children’s Book Award committee provides libraries in Kansas with a book list of nominees. There are two lists; 3-5 grades and 6-8 grades. Students may read or listen to read-aloud from both lists. If a student reads or listens to two or more books on a list, they are eligible to vote for their favorite in the spring. Students may vote for both lists regardless of their grade level.
Brookwood Newbery Award Committee
5th and 6th grade students are invited to join our Brookwood Newbery Award Committee. According to the American Library Association, “The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.”
Brookwood Committee members read from a list of nominees, discuss the titles using Newbery Criteria and vote for their favorite in January. Take a look at our preliminary reading list below:

Chat-n-Chew
January through April, grades 2-6 students meet once a month during their lunch period to “Chat –N-Chew.” Parent volunteers facilitate a book club discussion with a small group of students. Books are provided by the Brookwood Library. Click the link below for a list of last year’s books.

From preschool story time to 6th grade musical and everything in between. Our music program involves so much more than singing. Kids learn recorders, keyboards, hand chimes and drums along with many other facets of music. We also have our very own school song!

SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM
In order to provide students with an introduction to Spanish language, students in First through Sixth grades receive forty minutes of instruction per week. This curriculum is a specially funded initiative provided by the Brookwood Education Foundation.
Students especially enjoy celebrating what they have learned each year during the Cinco de Mayo classroom festivities, when they not only speak in Spanish, but also get a taste of the culture with a fiesta!
